It was 1992 when I first saw an exhibit of Faith Ringgold’s work during a 25-year survey tour in Tacoma, Washington. An artist, feminist, and civil rights activist, Ms Ringgold mastered the blending of concept and materials in her story quilts.
The way she is able to combine quilting, painting and story fascinates me. Originally a painter, she turned to painting on fabric—it was much easier to roll up a quilt and have it delivered to a gallery than to build a crate and ship a large painting.
This NY Times article by Holland Carter is the most recent review I found of her work and her place in history. Ms Ringgold turned 80 this year, and her generous spirit continues to radiate. There is much we can learn from her work and life.
Check out her blog for more information, images, videos and related links.
